The Washington Times has a wonderful editorial today concerning Republicans and the Bolton nomination. I agree 100% with their assessment of Republicans. I have been saying for years that the Republicans need to start leading or they will lose. They were out of power for so long that I suspect that many Republicans are leery of aggravating their Democratic counterparts for fear of retaliation when Democrats are back in power. That has got to be the worse strategy I have ever heard. The Democrats, if the roles were reversed, would be shoving their policies and nominees down our throat without worrying about what the Republicans might do to them in the future. They are ruthless and power hungry and will stop at nothing to embarrass the President and regain power. Democrats will never play fair, no matter how many olive branches you extend to them. Once you know that and take it to heart, then it will be easier to get down to business. Play hardball with them. The American people have elected you guys to lead them. So lead! That means you have to make hard decisions. Yes, some may come back to haunt you, but if it is the right thing to do, then do it. Damn the consequences!
The Times nails it:
…When are Senate Republicans going to start acting like the majority party?…
…Does the senator ever wonder why the Democrats have a remarkable ability to discover “new” allegations every time they seek to delay a vote when they don’t have the votes to win a vote?…
…Perhaps it’s time to remind the waffling Republicans that Mr. Bolton has one of the most distinguished careers in government. If Messrs. Voinovich, Hagel and Chafee stick to the facts they’ll see how ridiculous it was to question Mr. Bolton’s ability to serve the United States as ambassador in the first place.

This is an issue that has bugged me for a long time. The Republicans have needed a few “pit bulls” for a long time. They are such wimps most of the time and it drives me crazy. For some reason the Republicans feel they have to take “the high road” and they gets their butts kicked all the time. Where is the Republican’s version of James Carvell??
